Iv thought of milling heads for myself but said fuck it. I took it to a shop where it was magnafluxed, milled and pressure checked for 50 I could have dicked around half a day with it and not been sure it was worth doing. I got it back done perfectly and ready to go. A Bridgeport vertical mill is a piece of shit to do a job like a head.

All it requires is fabrication of a steel adapter plate to interface between the Cincinnati column face and the back of the Bridgeport head. I put in new spindle bearings then gave up on the project due to lack of time. If you ever decide to tackle your project again l would consider an even trade: Bridgeport head for Cincinnati 2M vertical head.

They're still listed for sale on Hardinge's web site alongside modern CNC VMC's as the "Series 1": MSC will sell you a knee mill made by HardingeBridgeport for the low price of just over 20,000 . I don't know how many are still being sold at that price point given you can buy a decent clone for circa 5000.

The Bridgeport will do a great job. We also use a CNC machining center. The usual automotive machine shop follows existing holes. The heads and blocks, etc are originally machined on CNC vertical and horizontal machining centers. It is somewhat time consuming, but really the only way to do the job right.
